Opportunities for Giving
Penn State Annual Fund
Annual fund gifts provide the libraries with essential support. The following examples show what certain giving levels could purchase for the libraries:
$50,000 - Preservation Digital Resources
By the end of this decade, tens of millions of books, archival and manuscript materials, newspapers, and photographs will be in danger of extinction. Without committed preservation services that can utilize the newest technologies, scholars of today and tomorrow can no longer be assured access to the information that they need.$25,000 - Program Endowment for Technical Support, Research, and Instructional Programs
Libraries staff need to be trained in the new technologies, and research activities must be supported. Program endowments provide funding flexibility and allow the Libraries to be responsive to special needs and projects.$5,000 - 24-Hour Service to Laptop Library and Extended Hours during Finals
Students study at all hours of the day. To support their study habits, the Libraries operate the Laptop Library, a 24-hour, seven day a week library that is totally electronic. The Pattee and Paterno Libraries operate a special extended hours area, complete with computer lab access, until 2:00 a.m. During finals period, the Libraries partner with Information Technology Services to operate public buses after midnight to ensure that students return safely home.$2,500 - Open House
Over 5,000 students attend the Open House sponsored by the Libraries each year. This event creates a welcoming environment for new students and introduces them to the Libraries' services in a relaxed environment.$2,500 - Technology Classrooms
Each year, Penn State librarians instruct over 40,000 students how to take advantage of information technology. This kind of teaching requires state-of-the art technology classrooms that allow students to take advantage of the latest instructional software and to learn in a hands-on-environment.$2,500 - Subscription to an online or traditional journal
$500 - $1,000 Media Equipment
Students now incorporate photographs, audio, and video into their class assignments. To support this activity, the Libraries' Media and Technology Support Services (MediaTech) purchase and circulate camcorders, digital cameras, and other media equipment to students. MediaTech staff also instructs students on the appropriate use of the equipment. This has proven a very popular service, and funds are needed to acquire more and improved equipment.$250 Save Our Books
Did you know that over 100,000 volumes are in desperate need of preservation or they will be lost forever? We need 6,000 loyal Penn Staters willing to support this worthwhile project by pledging just $50 per year for five years.$50-100 Book with Recognition Bookplate
If someone in your life loves books and reading, or a particular subject or activity, a gift to the Libraries can be the perfect way to honor or remember them. Their name or your name (if you wish) will appear on a bookplate in an appropriate subject. We will send a card acknowledging your gift (not the dollar amount) unless you want it to be a surprise. $50 will plate one book, $100 for two books.Note: Gifts of $5,000 or more can be paid over a period of five years.
Endowments
Within the University Libraries, donors can establish an endowment to honor or memorialize a special friend or loved one. Books bought with the monies provided by the endowment will have personalized bookplates as a way to pay tribute to an honoree. Naming opportunities of designated spaces within the libraries may also be available.
