Patricia L. Best, former superintendent of schools in the State College Area School District, has been named Penn State’s 2009 Renaissance Fund honoree, and will be recognized at the 33rd annual Renaissance Fund dinner in November. The annual dinner raises money in the honoree’s name, and contributions are used to endow Renaissance Fund scholarships, which are awarded to academically talented Penn State students with the greatest financial need.

Joel N. Myers, the founder, president, and chairman of AccuWeather Inc. and current Penn State trustee and alumnus, has committed $2 million to help ensure Penn State’s continued international leadership in meteorology. The gift will support the Department of Meteorology’s weather center including its new facility on the sixth floor of Walker Building on the University Park campus. It is the largest gift ever made to the department and among the largest ever received for programs in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

Those who were closest to Sarah Donaldson have decided to honor her life by helping other students attend the University she cared so much about. Penn State Altoona has received a $100,000 grant from Norfolk Southern Foundation to help fund ongoing development of the campus’ proposed rail and transit engineering baccalaureate degree program, which would be the first of its kind in American higher education. The Penn State Alumni Association reported to the University Board of Trustees on July 10, 2009 that, despite the challenging economic environment, its membership has increased by nearly 500 and a new revenue-generating program has far surpassed its first-year goal. David C. Han, Alumni Association immediate past president, outlined the Association’s accomplishments for the 2008–09 academic year, including that its affiliated alumni groups have student scholarship endowments with a book value totaling nearly $5 million.

The Arboretum at Penn State hosted an open house in Phase I of the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens on June 19th for Penn State faculty and staff who have been supportive of the Arboretum in various ways since the 1970s. The invitees included Penn State employees and retirees who have served on Arboretum committees during the planning and design stages, donated through payroll deduction, done volunteer work, or contributed ideas and expertise to further the Arboretum.

Funds raised for Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital during 2008-09 totaled a record-breaking $3,202,513. Children’s Miracle Network also reached its goal to raise 750 pledges of $25 a month for 12 months during the telethon. In a historic move, the Penn State Alumni Association has pledged a gift of $2.1 million to support students across the University. In support of the University’s new fundraising drive, For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students, the gift will establish 35 Penn State Alumni Association Trustee Scholarships, each endowed at $50,000 in 12 colleges, at 20 campuses, and three additional undergraduate units. In addition, the gift will include $350,000 to support graduate and professional education.
