Gifts from donors have had a big impact on my life: I’ve gotten four scholarships from the University, two of which were created by individuals. Since I’m someone who pays out-of-state tuition, the awards have been a huge relief.

In my role as a member of the Student Philanthropy Council, I try to get my fellow seniors to start a personal tradition of giving back by contributing to the Senior Class Gift. I tell them that every gift counts—it all adds up. Personally, I’m inspired by the small gifts from people who give what they can, and by unrestricted gifts from alumni that give colleges and campuses new resources. >>more

“I know that I’m doing something important for the University and the student body.”

Why I Came to Penn State:

The main reason I came to Penn State is that I knew whatever program I chose, the University’s reputation would open doors for me. I’m a recipient of the Bunton-Waller Scholarship, which is awarded to academically-talented students with financial need at Penn State—especially those who contribute to the diversity of the student body. The amount of aid increases each year as long as you maintain a high grade point average, so it’s a great motivator. When I was considering which school to attend, that scholarship made all the difference. >>more

Why I Believe Giving Back is Important:

I first got involved through my church ministry. But it was from my mom that I learned the importance of giving back to the community and those in need. She taught me and my sisters to be responsible by encouraging us to put half of the money we earned doing chores into a special account. I used part of my savings to buy a laptop for college, and the rest I donated to a local nursing home where I was a volunteer.

I decided to join the Senior Class Gift Committee in order to be an integral part of giving back to Penn State. I want to leave something behind so that in the future, when I return to campus, I’ll see the 2009 Class Gift and be reminded of my time here and the ways that I made a difference.  >>more

“I want to make my senior year count.”

Why I Believe Giving Back is Important:

I’m the first person in my family to attend college. I always knew I wanted to get a degree, but who would have thought I’d end up at a great school like Penn State? Many people helped make my dream happen along the way. For example, I received a Bunton-Waller Scholarship that helped pay for my tuition and room and board. I’m so glad that I made it. It makes me want to give back to help other students achieve their goals, too. >>more

“My scholarship allowed me to come back to Penn State and finish my degree. It changed my life.”

Message to Alumni and Friends:

There are many challenges facing returning adult learners. Based on my personal experience, I’ve realized that no matter how intelligent or hard–working an individual may be, these challenges can be overwhelming. But funds for scholarships can make all the difference to students like me. My award allowed me to come back to Penn State and finish my degree; it changed my life. >>more

“I like the fact that when people find out that I attend Penn State, they expect more from me.”

Why I Believe Giving Back is Important:

I am the first one in my extended family to graduate from college. Hard work, persistence, and never giving up is what has propelled me to achieve, but it’s really the kindness of other people that has brought me this far. Now I feel indebted to Penn State and my community and would like to give other people a chance at making it. >>more
